Dear Scott Walker,

I wanted to thank you for invigorating my state.

For instilling in us a sense of great purpose and self-determination.

Thank you for igniting the fire that will burn your house down.

For planting the seed that will choose to survive.

Thank you for starting all of this.

Thanks for inspiring signs and songs – images and sounds that will live on and on via the internet and rock bands.

Your choices are paving the way for a great change.

Your ideas have led thousands of youth to feel their strength, use their voice and know their courage.

Because of you they are now more capable of participating in a future that involves change – careful though, that change will take you and your friends down.

You’ve done something extremely powerful, Governor, and I know that if you were here you would agree.

Defining moments can be hard.

They can be emotional and intense.

It’s really helpful when you can live through those moments with 60,000 friends.

Who are you hanging out with?

So it's true.It wasn't a dream?

The Arcade Fire actually won a Grammy?!?!?!?!?!!

It's funny because when you're at these award shows......you sit there most of the time thinking something like this:

"oh my god when will this thing be over this is so stupid i am wasting my time here there is no way in hell we are going to win and even if we do win it really doesn't matter anyway it won't change a thing and it doesn't mean anything to me really or anyone else for that matter it's just a moment in a day to pass away and oh my god here is the category we are in and there... they said our names out loud and i just felt a funny weird electric feeling shudder through my body and wouldn't it be funny if we actually won this thing and you know what..... why shouldn't we win? we made as good a record as anyone else here and oh lord what are you thinking don't be so stupid you are not going to win anything........ it will just be like when you were at school when you got passed over at gym class for being crap and you got looked over by the boys because you were red haired and not conventionally pretty and when your best friend chose to be best friends with someone else instead even though you had been a loyal and loving best friend and done your very best to be good your good just wasn't good enough and then you didn't get chosen to participate in A Midsummers Night Dream because for some inexplicable reason your teacher thought you were an upstart and didn't deserve a part and even when you wanted to take part SO badly that you told him you would work backstage as a stagehand instead or do make-up or do absolutely anything at all he asked of you because you wanted to take part in the production so desperately......... even then and despite all this conviction and passion........well he wouldn't let you take part ..............

And oh hold on a minute......... back to reality they are announcing the winner and the winner is........well why can't it be us? I WANT it to be us. I want to friggin WIN something goddamnit......I don't care WHAT it is I just want to feel what it's like to win something .....something like a Grammy .......oh yes that would be swell......wouldn't that be wonderful.......wouldn't that be something ....and you know what......some really AMAZING artists have won Grammy's in the past and we could be part of that incredible lineage........I am ready Mr De Mille.......I am ready!!!!!!!

Now while we are at it.....

Can I praise Barbara Streisand enough!?!??!?

DId you hear the sound of her voice?!!??!?!?!?

The width and the depth of it?!?!?!?!??!

It's still insane.

The way she can stand there and just let that voice out without strain or a choke.

If you watched Xtina sing last night you can visibly see the difference between someone really singing and then someone who is over reaching with extraneous tension.

Barbara smokes the competition.

No contest.

And finally......

WHy didn't they ever show Holly Brooks ( Skylar Grey's) face during my darling angel Eminem and Dre's slot?!?!?

It was very weird....especially as she is incredibly beautiful AND (more importantly) responsible for writing two of the most killer choruses in POP this last year or so.

Talented AND gorgeous? Why sit on that?!??!?!

But it was pretty moving to see Dre back on stage but you all know how I feel about that whole thing by now.

Just finished singing on a track for Serj Tankian and Steven Sater.

Garbage met Serj in Italy some years back at a festival we were playing at with System of a Down.

I was blonde and wild and staggering in pain from my divorce and I loved him so much then because he was so very courteous and human and connected.

As a result I am very honoured he asked me to sing on this song of his.

I admire him and his take on the world very much.

And of course being scottish is much like being Armenian except our blood struggle occurred much earlier in the world's history.

Brother to Brother

A Few Good Men

Under the most bizarre of extraordinary circumstances, I happened upon the delightful Kate Nash last night who only charmed me utterly and completely for life.
She was so open and present and forthright.
Such excellent and unusual traits to possess in one so young and lovely.

Whilst I am at the praising of the young and talented, a shout out must also go out to Marina of Marina and The Diamonds who exploded into my presence a few weeks ago whilst out in LA working on her new record.
She's quite magnificent I have to say. Full of thrust and vigor and life.

It fills me with joy to brush up against the new breed. To touch wires with them is thrilling. They speak the same language as me.

First Listen: PJ Harvey, 'Let England Shake'

PJ Harvey's eighth album, out on Feb. 15, finds the singer turning her gaze outward, toward the political situation in her homeland of England. The topics are as bleak and violent as they were on her most lacerating work, but this time the subjects are soldiers falling in battle ("like lumps of meat") and landscapes that have been torn up, both physically and spiritually. Much of Let England Shake feels like an elegy for not just her homeland, but also the entire world; the bitterness behind the title of "This Glorious Land" is underlined by words like, "Our lands are plowed by tanks and feet, feet marching."

Harvey composed the music after writing the lyrics — a process that took her about a year and a half — and the dreamy nature of many of these songs directly contrasts the brutality within. The autoharp is the defining instrument here, and its slightly tinny tone creates an atmosphere that's not of this world.

An early version of the title track, which she performed on a BBC talk show in front of former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, had her winding her high-pitched singing and autoharp around a sample of the standard "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)." The version on the album dispenses with that sample, but other songs here do directly incorporate snatches of others' work — a loop of Niney the Observer's "Blood and Fire" here, a borrowed line from Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" there — and the way they're used only heightens the singularity of Harvey's vision, which has been the one thing unifying the disparate albums she's released in her remarkable 20-year career.

Today I have Mostly Been Playing Melodica (3 de Febrero de 2011)

Sad to read today that the White Stripes have officially called it a day.

It's understandable given how complicated keeping a band alive can be but also so very heartbreaking in it's own way.

I shall miss them terribly but I shall also remember them in all their glory.

Doesn't seem so very long ago that I waved goodbye to Jack as they set off in his rickety old van in Perth, Australia 2002 after completing The BIg Day Out.

Goodbye Jackie Boy said I as I was thinking to myself,

"There goes a boy off to conquer the world"

and you know what?

I was damn right.

I told him I loved him. (true)

I also told him that I burst into tears when I saw him play on Joolz Holland this New years Eve past.

DUKE ERIKSON TAMBIEN CONFIRMA LA GRABACION DE UN NUEVO DISCO DE GARBAGE

La cantante de Garbage, Shirley Manson, hace poco reveló en su país natal, Escocia, que la banda se encuentra grabando un nuevo disco después de más de 5 años de un paréntesis musical. El resto de la banda casi ni habló de ellos pero el guitarrista Duke Erikson lo confirma en esta nota.

"Es verdad que estamos grabando" dijo Erikson. "Estamos trabajando en nueva música. Pero es demasiado temprano decir hacia donde está orientado". También agregó que la banda grabo algunas nuevas canciones y planea volver al estudio en Los Angeles la próxima semana. "No quiero hacer un gran escándalo al respecto, ya que mañana podría cambiar todo" dijo Erikson. En el 2005, Shirley Manson dijo que la banda se iba a tomar un extendido recreo después una gira mundial con su último disco "Bleed like me", por no decir que se separarían.

"Contrariamente a lo que mucha gente dijo, Garbage nunca se separó oficialmente," dijo Erikson. "Simplemente tomamos caminos seprados por un rato". Erikson dijo también que no está seguro a donde los llevara este nuevo material, pero agregó "Estamos escribiendo algunas cosas muy buenas y lo estamos disfrutando. Es lo que realmente hemos estado haciendo hasta ahora."

Shirley estaba haciendo referencia al guitarrista Steve Marker, que ahora vive en Colorado con su familias, y a Butch Vig, el baterista de la banda y productor que se encuentra trabajando en un proyecto con Foo Fighters.

La escocesa Manson finalmente anuncio el regreso de Garbage durante una conferencia en la universidad de del Oeste, en Escocia, según el diario online "The Guardian".

Also......if you like theatre and you live in the LA area......Richard Greenberg's "Take Me Out" is playing at The Celebration Theatre on Santa Monica Blvd and it's pretty damn good. I am perhaps just a tiny bit biased bearing in mind that one of my buddies from acting class is playing one of the main roles BUT there are some really great performances in there and the writing is pretty spectacular.

But do be warned........there is quite alot of male nudity (oof) so if you are a ghastly prude then this is not a play for you.

Thankyou to my niece and nephew for the really glamourous virus that took me out of the game and rendered me quite literally, shitless and speechless for 8 days straight. (It's just as well the pair of you are really, REALLY friggin' cute)

Thankyou to Mr G Kane, house painter extraordinaire for fixing up my badly flooded house to the point where it now, quite literally, looks good enough to eat.

And thankyou to Mary Karr for the gift of "Lit" which is undoubtedly my book of the year so far without one shadow of a doubt.

I finally got around to see the Ben Affleck directed movie The Town and I just have to say that I loved it!
It's a skillfully made, old -school heist/ thriller with a killer cast.
Jeremy Renner is terrifying in it, Blake Lively continues to lock down her rightful place as new Hollywood royalty and Ben Affleck?
Well let's just say those days of standing by JLo's side, covered in fake tan and the merest hint of lipgloss are long gone.
His abundant talents on display in this movie are impressive.
And he looks good enough to eat.

Yesterday I spent the most heavenly afternoon hearing Placido Domingo sing with the LA Opera, performing the world premiere of a new opera by Daniel Catan called Il Postino..... based on the film of the same name.

It was perfectly sublime!

Bravo Maestro Bravo!!!!

The very same production is to premiere in Vienna (Theatrer an der Wein) and my beloved Paris (Theatre du Chatelet) too so if you happen to love poetry, music, nature and romance....for indeed it is an opera about all these things...................and you want to hear a great tenor sing in the role of a lifetime.......then go see this production.

It's unmissable.

Just got back from being interviewed for a film that's being made about my darling Vic Chesnutt who died earlier this year.

All you b-side geeks, hardcore Garbage fans and those of you who came to see us live will no doubt remember our versions of "Kick My Ass" and "Supernatural"......both songs written by Vic.

Anyways.....he was a musical genius,funny as hell and a general, all around good egg and those of us who were lucky enough to know him are over the moon that director/producer Scott Stuckey is honouring his memory with this documentary.

Can't wait to see the finished thing.

Vic would have been SOOOoooo thrilled to know so many of us held him in such high regard and somewhat surprised what a deep, lasting impression he made on all of those lives he touched.

My dog has just come back from the vet and I am freaking out....
She's got friggin pneumonia!
Ugh.
They gave her some antibiotics and a sedative and so now she's totally out of it.
Infact she's lying on the bed right now looking like a smacked up addict having just shat herself......
My poor darling little woofer. It's breaking my heart.
I have no idea how parents manage to get through the day without worrying themselves sick.
I only have a dog and I can barely handle it.
Thankgod I don't have children. Why I'd have no hair by now!!!
Parents are my heroes.
And that's a fact.
Oh yeah and cleaning up poo is NOT fun. Infact it is decidedly NASTY.
And that's another fact for ya.

Pablove one another......

I stumbled upon an artist/photographer called Sharon Montrose by complete chance one day when I saw her exquisitely photographed Animal Series.
They are quite literally, perfectly rendered.
I bought some of her prints for my own home, for family, for friends........ ( A pig, A Lamb, A Cockatoo......) and ended up emailing her........she photographed my dog.........I wanted her to become my new best friend because she was such a cool girl so I invited her to dinner etc etc and the story continues...........

It was only much later I discovered that she had been following the Pablog and knew all about Pablo's struggle with cancer.
We were family and we didn't even know it.

Anyways......Jo-Ann just emailed me this link and without making a song and dance about it, we discovered that Sharon had gone and done something very beautiful in honour of Pablo and I wanted to share it with you here because her gesture really touched Pablo's family and their extended family which includes me.........which in turn includes you.
Sorry for the long winded story.
I can't help it when it comes to Pablo.

Okay so I am doing a Poll

Okay so......

Here is a question and I pose it to you all because I am somewhat confused.

Let me first state my position:

I am at odds with plastic surgery, botox, filler and surgical enhancement.

Meanwhile.........

Almost everyone I know is at it.

My question is this:

Have I lost my mind?

I am 44 years old.

That is ANCIENT in the world of entertainment.

That is even older in the world of music.

I feel like if I stay true to myself

I am screwing myself out of a job.

And yet......

I look at my heroines.....

None of them look younger than they are.

They all look their age.

And yet.....

All of my friends........most of whom are either my age or younger

talk about what they have done or what they want to have done or what they are going to do

to cheat age

and therefore attempt to cheat death.

I think to myself:

"Why bother?"

But I'm not sure that's normal

I suspect all my ageing but augmented friends are feeling sorry for me

and thinking what a glorious career I could have

if only I would start to lie to myself

and everyone else

I am confused.

Deeply confused.

Please help me process or understand.

That is what I am wondering today.
I am wearing my Christopher Kane snarling ape T-shirt in an attempt to figure it out.
I have also removed all traces of Neon Orange nail polish in exchange for a subtle dove grey.
When your head is full of nonsense its better to keep a low profile.

Why do we avoid the truth? Its counter intuitive but we do it anyway.
I don't like the truth. I prefer fiction and fantasy.
Why is this?
Because some truths are really fantastic.

La Vie Romantique

Just spent the most heavenly week in Paris.......

I ate white chocolate eclairs from Cacao et Chocolat on La Rue de Buci every single day because they were that good.

I kid you not.

If you live in Paris or you make it there one day.......TRUST me.........just make a pilgrimage there and try one. You will NEVER eat another one like it.

Pure unadulterated perfection.

Almost as regularly as the eclairs.......I lit a candle for everyone I love or have ever loved in one of the many exquisitely beautiful churches dotted around the city.

For a couple of euros that I dropped in a box,in each church I visited I briefly settled my soul by adding a candle to the hordes already left burning there and felt a small connection with my loved ones and my dead.

Queued for over two hours like a crazy person to visit the YSL retrospective at Le Petit Palais but it was worth the wait.

I quite literally swooned at one point.

Not because of any one thing in particular but simply by the sheer scale of his vision and the unerring passion that must have fueled it.

SO inspiring.

Ah Paris. You have never failed me yet.

Art and Shirley's Wild Accordion ( Or is it?)

These days if a print publication is still around after 25 years, well, that's quite an accomplishment. Cleveland-based music and culture magazine, Alternative Press, started out as an underground fanzine in 1985 and has since become an internationally distributed glossy that focuses on metal, hard rock and punk music scenes.

To celebrate, the folks at AP decided to book a flight to L.A. and throw one hell of a party. Friday July 9 and Saturday July 10 mark the opening of Alternative Press' 25th anniversary art show at the Merry Karnoswky Gallery, a first-time exclusive group exhibit featuring original works by iconic (and oft controversial) musicians and visual artists. They may be different, but they're still part of the same alt-culture aesthetic.

On display will be paintings, sculpture, photography and drawings from nearly 25 artists including Adam Jones (Tool), Marilyn Manson, Tim Armstrong (Rancid), Shepard Fairey, Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy), Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), Travie McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Tara McPherson, and Shirley Manson (Garbage). Also on display will be unearthed rarities from the AP print archives.

L.A. Weekly spent the last four days interviewing a handful of the participating musicians and visual artists. We talked to Tool guitarist Adam Jones about his past creating special effects make-up for Stan Winston. Plus we discussed the fact that Jones and Steve Niles are gearing up for the launch of their new comic book series, a conceptual mashup of X-Files and 30 Days of Night, out later this month on DC Comics imprint WildStorm. Later we caught up with influential street artist Shepard Fairey to riff on the marriage of music and art, as well as punk rock influences and what Fairey calls "audio-graphic design."

"We wanted to put together a gallery show to not only do something for our readers, but also something that our adult colleagues in the music industry would enjoy, not just a concert," said AP publisher and art director Norman Wonderly.

He continued, "We found artists through the magazine and then also paid attention to, like, Marilyn Manson, who's been showing his art for a while and has been on the AP cover so many times. So we asked him. Then we found out that Shirley Manson dabbled so we asked her. It's so cool to find out that they have another outlet beyond music and are doing something really visual. We wanted to mix modern day musicians that we were covering in AP with musicians from our past."

Props to AP for choosing a gallery over a deafening concert to ring-in their big 2-5. Celebrating the anniversary as an art show will actually encourage people to talk, share stories and have an audible dialog about the rare works on display.

Wonderly agrees. "Exactly, and that was really the reason to do it. Some [of the artists] we've never met. We're in Cleveland so it's nice to actually get a chance to talk to them and it not be loud and crazy. Although I have a feeling it might get loud and crazy [laughs]. It's super exciting."

I am not a visual artist in any way, shape or form but I am a lover of the arts so I gleefully embraced the challenge of creating something. I tried to think of an opposite to "alternative" which led me to consider knitting something. I then decided to subvert the medium completely thus producing "Peking Noodle (Ode to Louise Bourgeois)". Maybe it's an all seeing eye... fortune teller to the world, maybe it isn't. Art, as they so often say, is in the eye of the beholder!"

When the demented decision by the Scottish Government was made last year to release the Lockerbie Bomber, I was utterly befuddled.
Something smelled as fishy as a tarts VG .

Whatever went down was clearly not a simple act of idiocy masquerading as an act of compassion but something far more complex and sinister.
Now it is rumoured that BP allegedly lobbied for the release of this man although the British Government are loudly insisting that this is not the case at all.

David Cameron, the British prime minister has come out in defence of BP claiming that the Scottish Government made this decision independently of the British Government and based their decision on compassionate grounds alone.

Now call me a cynic but what a load of utter twaddle.
If the Scots were feeling compassionate that day why didn't they release all the other criminals who are terminally ill in Scottish jails, many of whom have committed crimes far less serious than the Lockerbie Bomber.

Fishy I tell you.

¿Cómo es que la cantante de Garbage termina participando de Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles?

Aunque no estaba buscando meterme oficialmente en la actuación es algo que siempre he querido. Entonces un día, Josh Friedman, productor ejecutivo de la serie, me llamó para ver si estaba interesada en audicionar para la serie. Obtuvo el papel antes de comprender las implicaciones que esto tendríamos para mí. Me siento muy afortunada de todos modos, porque este papel lleva en un gran momento en mi vida, cuando necesito sacudir un poco las cosas.

¿Puedes hablarme del papel que interpretarás?

Su nombre es Catherine Weaver y es una CEO (Jefe Oficial Ejecutivo) de una corporación que desarrolla ciertas tecnologías. Ella es muy fuerte, decidida, una mujer muy singular. Es un personaje muy bueno para interpretar.

¿Deben esperar los fans una pelea de chicas entre Sarah Connor y Catherine Weaver?

Que yo sepas no, a no ser que tu sepas algo que yo no se. Te envían los guiones en pequeñas partes, así que realmente, no tengo idea el arco que seguirá el personaje completamente, lo cual es muy excitante.
¿Has disfrutado el salto de cantante a actriz?

Es muy exigente el no hacer actuado nunca profesionalmente. Pero parece que las cosas están saliendo bien, es como estar nuevamente a los 6 años jugando en una caja de arena en la plaza. Algunas de mis escenas son ensambladas, otras son con Richard (Agent Ellison). De hecho, tengo muchas escenas con Richard. Que es mucho mejor actor de lo que yo pensaba, lo que me hace pensar que yo también estoy actuando.

¿Encuentras al actuar en una serie un trabajo pesado?

No me molesta para nada. No soy Lena que está en el set todos los días. No tengo tantas escenas y realmente se parece mucho al tiempo en que los músicos usan para trabajar. ¿Haber obtenido un papel como éste en tu primera audición debe ser un gran comienzo para una carrera en actuación para ti o no?. Te diré que es muy loco todo esto. No puedo creer que esté sucediendo. Me parece una locura. Me hermana menor me dijo que no es justo, que primero soy una estrella de rock y ahora una estrella de la tv! Es muy divertido, siento que tengo mucha suerte.

¿Este papel cambia el foco de tu carrera? ¿Deben esperar los fans más actuación y menos cantar desde ahora? ¿O viceversa?

Me gustaría actuar un poco más. Me encantó esta experiencia. Es excitante y algo nuevo para mi. Pero espero siempre estar en la música. La música ha sido mi vida desde que tengo quince años. No quiero cerrar ninguna puerta, estoy esperando a ver que pasa con este personaje.

¿Hay alguna posibilidad de que hagas música para la serie?

No, eso no es parte de la propuesta.

¿Qué te pareció tu primera experiencia en el ComicCon?

Me encantó estar acá, he escuchado sobre el ComicCon durante años. Me encantó el aspecto de agujero subterráneo que tiene y el poder identificarse con eso. Ha sido muy emocionante para mi venir a este evento. Antes de salir al escenario tenía unos nervios terribles en el estómago

¿Eres fan de las películas de Terminator?

Terminator 2 fue mi película. Me pareció que Linda Hamilton era tan intensa y poderosa que sólo puedo identificarme con ella. Yo era joven, desinteresada, yo quería ser Linda Hamilton. Quería ser poderosa. Quería poder patear los traseros de todos.

PETA se toma muy en serio sus campañas, y cada vez son más las celebridades que han posado para los cartéles que la asociación en favor de la protección a los animales coloca por las calles de Londres y de otras grandes ciudades en el mundo entero.

Ya hemos visto a Pamela Anderson, Casey Affleck, Sadie Frost y a Heather Mills (antes de que gracias a Stella la retiraran de la campaña) ser solidarios con un grupo tan comprometido.

Shirley Manson, dijo al respecto: "Lo siento si la imagen hiere suceptibilidades, pero la agresividad de los anuncios tal vez haga que las personas se lo piensen dos veces antes de utilizar pieles de animales para un abrigo, un bolso o un par de botas"

Algunas de las campañas más famosas de la organización han ido en contra no sólo de las celebridades que utilizan pieles reales como Madonna, Kate Moss o las hermanas Olsen; sino tambien contra diseñadores y tiendas que siguen la venta, y si bien muchas veces podemos pensar que este tipo de campañas no funcionan, firmas tales como Prada y Stella McCartney repudian el uso de pieles reales, por lo que dentro de sus colecciones, utilizan unicamente material sintético.

El anuncio en cuestión muestra a Shirley vistiendo un diseño de Stella McCartney (quien, vale aclarar, dona miles de libras esterlinas al año a PETA y coopera con ellos cercanamente) y cargando los restos de un pequeño zorro acompañada de la frase “Aquí está el resto de tu abrigo de piel”.

Tippi Hedron.
I just about fainted with electrical thrills.
Tippi Hedron is one of my most favourite actresses of all time.
(She pales into comparison with Bette Davis in my heart's affections but nevertheless, I am just wild about her!)

You know.......it's kind of pathetic that I care.
I am ( afterall or allegedly) a fully mature woman.
But I can't help it.
Why are people so turned off by Kristen Stewart?!?!?!
I don't get it.
I think she's the best thing about the entire Twilight franchise.

She's delicious to look at.
She's a talented actress.

Underneath which there was a brief description of how we mortals are made up of stardust. That all our atoms come from dead stars.
We began as stars and so too do we end as stars.
We are cosmically recycled.
I cling to that idea.

The Death of A Dandy and the Pursuit of Extremes

So sad to read of the death of the artist and self confessed dandy man Sebastian Horsley who died of a suspected heroin overdose yesterday.
Not because I knew him well because I didn't.
And certainly not because whenever I saw him he was particularly nice to me because he wasn't.

But because he was this wonderful, colourful, larger than life character who frequented the same bars as I did back in Edinburgh when I was in a band called Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and I but dreamed of an exciting,glamourous life filled with adventure.

The atmosphere in the bars would change whenever Sebastian arrived. He was our small town prince! Our local "celebrity".
Not because he had actually achieved much at this point in his life but just because he had the balls to be flamboyant and shockingly unapologetic. He also happened to hang out with a just released from prison for murder man called Jimmy Boyle,who was once reputed to be the most violent man in scotland but who has since renounced violence and gone on to become a successful artist himself.
Anyway....when Sebastian arrived on any scene we would all carry on nervously sipping on our rum and cokes....pretending not to notice he was standing at the bar right behind us, eyeing the room with a disdainful, haughty look on his face as if to say:
" Look at all you pathetic people..........with your cheap clothes and your trite conversations........look at you all with your hungry little mouths and your ambitious little faces.........I think you're scum."
Regardless........as a disempowered teenager desperate to be "cool" I was in awe of him.
I wanted to seek out his approval.
I wanted to catch his attention.

By a weird stroke of fate, I knew his girlfriend Evelynn who would deign to speak to me on occasion and as a result so would he..
She would even come to the occasional GoodBye Mr Mackenzie show.......always looking a tad bored and slightly fatigued somewhere near the back.
Dark haired, obnoxiously beautiful, crooked teeth and mysterious allure.......tight black dresses, pale skin, red lipstick and seamed black stockings tipped into ridiculously high heels.She had studied art at St. Martins in London and she was my heroine.

Yeah.....getting back to Sebastian.
Even his name seemed cool to me.
Quasi religious in undertone and the name of a darling little character from the TV series Belle and Sebastian.......it was the perfect name in my mind at the time.
Anyway.....I digress.
My point being he was larger than life and seemingly indestructable.
He was powerful in a way because he was beautiful and cruel and unapproachable.
Except he wasn't.
And that's what makes me sad.

Death got him too.
And a little bit of my past into the bargain.

Damn death.
Damn it I say.

What a business this dying is.

RIP Dandy Man (You too Evelynn although you passed us by some time ago. x)

Okay so..........you've got to understand something......
I grew up in a house with a record player and nothing but film Soundtracks to listen to.
My two sisters and I grew up knowing every single note and nuance of "The Sound Of Music",
"My Fair Lady", "Oliver", "Oklahoma", "South Pacific", "Grease", "Kiss Me Kate", "Guys and Dolls", "Joseph's Technicolour Dream Coat" , "Cabaret" , "The King and I" and a dozen others I could reel off here.
We were OBSESSED. Utterly and completely and we played those records to death and I don't care if it's uncool or not ......I want "My Favourite Things" to be played at my funeral just like it was played at my own mum's funeral.
So you can imagine......when the show GLEE came along, I was ripe for the picking.
When the creators dreamed up this show, I can guarantee you they were thinking of people like me as their potential target audience.
Anyways......I digress.......
Point being.......I know this is ridiculous but I have just finished watching the season finale on TIVO a few moments ago and when Finn told Rachel he loved her, I burst into tears. When the class sang their thankyou song to Mr Schuester....... what did I do?
That's right, I burst into tears. When Quinn was birthing her baby as "Bohemian Rhapsody" was being camped up like crazy by stage school enthusiasts , my husband threatened to turn the TV off cause I was a weeping mess.
Now I'm sorry but that's just so wrong on so many levels right?
But there you have it. It's official.
I am a GLEEK.
Plain and simple.
Simple as that.

Los “hombres de Garbage” dieron con Shirley cuando la vieron en MTV cantando junto a su grupo escocés Angelfish. Al principio, Garbage parecía un experimento del genial Vig, pero Shirley se hizo su lugar y todas las canciones aparecen firmadas por el grupo: ella también es compositora. “Nunca estuve en esto por el dinero; de hecho ahora podría retirarme y hacer discos solistas, o no hacer nada, por suerte tuvimos éxito y mis finanzas están más que bien. Pero siempre fui una cantante: hago esto desde hace veintitrés años. Y no sabría hacer otra cosa.”

Shirley Manson es hija de un célebre genetista que planeaba una carrera académica para su hija. “Pero yo lo decepcioné. Bueno, ahora está orgulloso de mí, pero cuando era adolescente teníamos problemas porque yo prefería trabajar de vendedora o cantar en grupos. No era lo que él quería para mí.” Al mismo tiempo, lidiaba con problemas de autoestima que llegaron a grados extremos: “Me cortaba, bebía, tomaba todas las drogas que encontraba. Era una chica oscura, depresiva, obsesionada con la muerte. Nunca me sentí cómoda con mi imagen, tampoco ahora”. En ese entonces, cuenta, se burlaban de ella por sus “ojos de sapo”, y todavía le cuesta librarse de ese desprecio, a pesar de agraciar tapas de revistas, a pesar del contrato con Calvin Klein y de la línea de cosméticos MAC, a pesar de que claramente es una mujer bellísima. Hasta no hace mucho, a los fotógrafos les costaba tomar su imagen, porque cuando llegaba la sesión, Shirley se encerraba en el baño y se negaba a salir. “Eran días oscuros. Estaba loca todo el tiempo. Estoy mejor ahora aunque no me siento totalmente cómoda conmigo misma. Ya no me asusta verme en fotos, pero tampoco me hace sentir bien.” El tema Bleed Like Me del nuevo disco lidia con algunos de los fantasmas de Shirley: “Ella acerca las tijeras de papá a su piel/ Y cuando lo hace llega el alivio/ Y cuando esconde las cicatrices que guarda bajo su ropa canta/ ¿Podés sangrar como yo?”

Sin embargo, Shirley se niega a someterse a cirugía estética alguna. “Estoy moralmente en contra de la cirugía estética. La homogeneización en cualquier forma me enoja. Estas imágenes mediáticas de perfección irreal me enferman. Hay una intolerancia a la imperfección y los defectos que vuelve loco a todo el mundo. Lo irónico es que la belleza es belleza porque no es común. Porque es rara. Odio esta noción de que si no sos joven hermosa y perfecta no sos nada. Esa ecuación es la noción más aterradora que ha perpetuado esta sociedad. Las mujeres están arruinadas si la creen: así siempre serán controladas y explotadas.” A esta altura, hay varias preguntas de las que Manson no puede zafar: qué piensa del paso del tiempo, cómo se hace para madurar en una industria donde las estrellas pop apenas son adolescentes. “Noto el paso del tiempo, y es una experiencia rara para cualquier mujer, mucho más si está en el ojo público. Pero no quiero sentirme avergonzada por la vida que llevé o por convertirme en la persona que soy. Creo que tengo suerte por haber crecido en Escocia; como regla, no tenemos miedo de envejecer. Pero es difícil trabajar en una industria que vampiriza a las mujeres. Y que les pide a las mujeres ambiciosas que se desnuden. Cada vez más. Las chicas asocian ser sexies con estar desnudas. Todo es ‘mostrame tu concha’. Si una juega ese juego, es imposible sostener una carrera. Siempre va a haber alguien más joven, más hermosa, más deseable. Es un templo de polvo.”

Pero de todos los mandatos, el que más irrita a Shirley Manson es el de ser madre. “Me preguntan todo el tiempo ‘¿para cuándo el bebé?’ y estoy en un punto en que quiero gritar: ¡¡¡No voy a tener ningún puto hijo!!! Estoy tan harta de que me fuercen a eso. Como si tener hijos fuera la consumación de la vida de una mujer. Veo la forma en que cierta gente controla o vive su vida a partir de sus hijos. Y no me gusta. La presión me hace sentir que debo desearlo, pero tener hijos nunca fue algo que quisiera hacer. Nunca en mi vida. Claro, a veces me toca la autoestima. Cuando tu vida no se conforma al plan casa-auto-hijos, hay un elemento de ‘soy un fracaso’. No importa cuán exitosa sea tu carrera.”

Hablando de sexo

Una de las más importantes contribuciones de Shirley Manson a Garbage –y al mundo del pop– fue la introducción de una sensualidad juguetona pero adulta, lejos de la histeria de las estrellas teen. En las entrevistas nunca se reprime, y se divierte. “Cuando estaba casada había decidido ser monógama, y es difícil sostener eso en una gira. Así que tuve que aprender a masturbarme bien. Por suerte supe pronto cómo llevarme al orgasmo sola; y me sirvió en otros terrenos también porque, se sabe, en general los hombres no lo tienen muy claro. Como regla, creo que ningún menor de treinta sabe cómo llevar al orgasmo a una mujer. Y, aunque no quiero sonar como una estúpida pomposa, siempre elegí muy bien a mis amantes. Soy muy quisquillosa. A pesar de que tengo horrendos problemas de autoestima, creo que mi cuerpo es algo precioso que no puedo entregar así como así.”

En vivo, los legendarios shows de Garbage muestran a Shirley en todo su esplendor: andrógina, desenfadada, elegante y explícita cuando hacía falta. En la canción que abre Bleed Like Me canta, segura: “Conozco algunos trucos que te van a retorcer/ Tengo una fiebre, vení, chequeála/ A lo mejor lo nuestro no va a ser largo, pero vamos a disfrutarlo mientras dure”. El sexo, dice, es un lugar en el que está cómoda. “El sexo, reírse, la música. Son las cosas fundamentales de la vida, por lo menos de mi vida. Reírse y coger. Es lo que quiero, además de estar en una banda de rock hasta que me caiga muerta.”

Viéndola en el escenario o leyendo sus declaraciones parece imposible pensar que Shirley Manson tenga problemas de autoestima; y, sin embargo, ese inconveniente figura en su catálogo de confesiones, que incluyen el aprendizaje masturbatorio y el hastío por la belleza de quirófano. He aquí a la cantante de Garbage.

Shirley Manson trata de que las cosas sean diferentes. Probar que se puede ser una estrella pop deseada y glamorosa a los treinta y ocho años. Que una mujer puede vivir una existencia de giras justo como un músico varón sin que renunciar a la vida doméstica signifique una frustración. Que se puede estar al frente de una banda de hombres sin ser la figurita que está al frente pero no interviene en las decisiones; algo que hicieron muchas otras cantantes como Debbie Harry o Crissie Hynde, linaje al que Manson se enorgullece de pertenecer. Que, en fin, una forma de ser alternativa es posible y divertida.

Pero el camino no fue nada fácil. Garbage, el grupo integrado por Shirley (escocesa) y los norteamericanos Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, Butch Vig (productor del superexitoso disco Nevermind de Nirvana), se formó en 1994 y al principio todo fue gloria: el primer disco tuvo megahits como Queer, Stupid Girl u Only Happy When It Rains, rock de guitarras con un toque tecnológico, infeccioso, comercial y sofisticado. Shirley se convirtió en una diva indie, y llegó a ser modelo de Calvin Klein. En 1997, el disco Version 2.0 también fue exitoso, pero no pudieron repetir la jugada cuatro años después con Beautiful Garbage (que fue un desastre comercial) y la banda estuvo a punto de separarse. De hecho, dice Shirley, es un milagro que hayan logrado editar su nuevo disco Bleed Like Me, después de dramas y problemas internos. De hecho, cree, el futuro del grupo se sellará recién cuando salgan de gira este año. Shirley Manson no es una mujer que oculte las turbulencias internas de su grupo para que el público crea que todo está bien. Al contrario: “Ninguno de nosotros creía que podía hacer este disco. No eran los desacuerdos habituales sobre la dirección musical: realmente no nos llevábamos bien. Nadie quería trabajar con el otro. Si alguno de nosotros llegaba con una idea, los demás se negaban a trabajarla. Al final, abandonamos”.

Para colmo, la banda venía con muchos problemas desde antes. En la gira de 2002, como soporte de U2 y No Doubt, Shirley perdió la voz y tuvo que operarse de un quiste en las cuerdas vocales. La intervención fue exitosa, pero tuvo que descansar la garganta por doce meses. Y se separó de su esposo, el escultor Eddie Farrell, después de 5 años de matrimonio, experiencia que quedó documentada en la dolorosa It’s All over but the Crying (“Todo terminó salvo el llanto”) del nuevo disco: “Si pudiera cambiaría todo/ Porque no puedo olvidarte aunque no me creas/ Ahora no puedo seguir adelante/ Ni puedo volver atrás/ ¿Adónde se fue toda la luz que teníamos?”. La relación era a distancia: Shirley hacía sus giras, pasaba tiempo en Wisconsin (donde Butch Vig tiene su estudio) y Los Angeles, y dos veces por año volvía a casa. Ahora sigue considerando a Escocia su hogar, admite que es difícil trabajar con norteamericanos, y las diferencias culturales no son menores. “Pero son más importantes las diferencias de género. Mis compañeros tienen entre 45 y 53 años, y son hombres a la antigua, que se guardan todo. Es agotador. Tuvimos reuniones terribles cuando escribíamos este disco. Nadie le pegó a nadie, una pena. Hubiera sido algo mucho más limpio y saludable. Pero desafortunadamente los hombres de Garbage son pasivos-agresivos. Nunca se golperían, y jamás le darían un puñetazo a una mujer. Los problemas de comunicación son duros. Un ejemplo: una noche, nos dimos cuenta de que hacía mucho que no veíamos a Butch. Resultó que estaba en cama con fiebre hacía dos días y no le había dicho a nadie. Al final terminó internado, en coma, con hepatitis A. Ellos no pueden lidiar con nada cuando llega un punto de crisis. Yo trato de que se abran, pero no se puede obligar a hablar a la gente.”

"Soy liberal y paranoica"

(Diario Clarin - 22/04/2005) Uno se la imagina de negro, montada a los tacos aguja y, en las fantasías más arriesgadas, con la garra de una mujer-pantera. "Shirley Manson no tiene una belleza convencional y eso hace que no puedas sacar la mirada de encima de ella", dice la periodista inglesa que entrevista a la cantante de Garbage en Londres, pero yo no entro en hipnosis porque hablo con Shirley por teléfono y, como única seña personal, noto que pronuncia las errrrrres con el fervor de una institutriz austríaca. "Su cara recuerda a Picasso en su fase cubista", describe la inglesa: "Elegantemente angulosa, con labios fruncidos y ojos delineados un poco demasiado separados". Shirley es una pinturita: a veces Picasso y otras, la del Payaso Triste que cuelga en el living de la tía Delia.

—Te definieron como una "mezcla de sensibilidad glam y pesimismo escocés". ¿Estás de acuerdo?

—Soy escocesa y tengo una veta pesimista pero eso es propio de alguien que vive en una cultura empapada de pesimismo. Vivimos en un clima muy duro, llueve siempre. ¡Vivo pensando en un desastre inminente!

(Si la lluvia la hace tan feliz, qué duro habrá sido dejar Edimburgo, "mi hogar oficial, donde recibo los impuestos", y mudarse a Wisconsin, el desierto blanco americano donde filmaron Fargo: "Aunque hoy viajo como una nómade... ¡soy una gitana del rock and roll, baby!").

Volviendo a la definición, más difícil será que acepte lo del glamour sensible: "No, no. No me identifico con la forma en que la gente me percibe". Lo dice: a) la pop model de Calvin Klein y cosméticos MAC, la dueña de uno de los rostros más fashionistas de Europa; b) la que en su último tema (Why Do You Love Me) aclara: "No soy tan linda como las chicas de las revistas".

—Ahí salen seres humanos que no tienen nada que ver con la realidad. Nadie tiene los abdominales marcados como una plancha de ravioles. Y todos somos culpables al compararnos con esa idea de belleza. Aunque no sé cómo es en la Argentina, donde hay gente muy linda...

¿Está siendo irónica? Shirley se monta en su personaje preferido: es la dominatriz del rock que grita con la fuerza de la que estuvo callada a la fuerza. Garbage no saca un disco desde hace cuatro años, cuando un quiste en las cuerdas vocales la dejó literalmente muda. Si Gudrun, la protagonista de The Raspberry Reich (la última sátira porno de Bruce LaBruce: está en el BAFICI) se cansa de la vida burguesa y propone la revolución amatoria, Shirley parece seguir los pasos de aquella anarquista del amor y aclara su plataforma: "Todo es sobre sexo y política".

—Hablás de amor, engaño, traición... ¿qué te pasó en estos cuatro años?

—Tuve la misma cuota de problemas que todo el mundo. Y supongo que eso salió a la luz en estas canciones, pero no todas son autobiográficas.

—¿Son un estudio sobre las crisis amorosas de los treinta y pico?

—No, para nada. El disco habla de una lucha por aceptarnos a nosotros mismos, con defectos y vulnerabilidades, pero no del amor perdido. Muchos temas son políticos, como Metal Heart, que es una canción antibélica.

—¿Está inspirada en la guerra de Irak?

—Sí. La escribí pensando en lo que debe sentir un soldado al llegar a Irak y darse cuenta de que las razones que le dieron no son ciertas, que lo engañaron. Fue una guerra loca y Bush y Blair se comportaron de una manera irresponsable e inhumana.

—También decís que el verdadero enemigo no es el sexo...

—Claro: Sex Is Not the Enemy es una canción de fiesta y tiene que ver con el sexo y la política, sobre todo con referencia a EE.UU., donde hay un avance de la derecha moralista y una firme decisión de Bush de atentar contra los derechos reproductivos de la mujer y de quitarles a los gays el derecho a casarse.

—Garbage nació hace 10 años: ¿te sentís una sobreviviente de los '90?

—Me siento una sobreviviente y punto. Hago discos desde los '80, tengo suerte porque tengo éxito. Me considero una privilegiada porque es poco frecuente en esta industria que una mujer tenga una carrera tan larga...

Shirley evangeliza con la convicción del exitoso comprometido (sí: Bono es uno de sus mejores amigos). En esta época aprovecha cada micrófono para hablar de sexo progre o para desconfiar de Bush & Blair. Y si al lanzar el disco Version 2.0 (1998) reconocía las conspiranoias como fuente de inspiración ("tiene influencias de Patti Smith y Kraftwerk, pero también de películas como La conversación o El embajador del miedo"), hoy directamente se asume: "Esta es mi mejor definición: soy liberal y paranoica".

Angelfish - Suffocate Me

Angelfish fue una banda de rock alternativo originaria de Escocia. La banda se creó originalmente con gran parte de los miembros de otra banda: Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie.

Aunque Shirley Manson no era un miembro muy activo del grupo, ella es la más conocida de todos los integrantes, puesto que la ayudó a lanzar su carrera como vocalista de la banda Garbage. Inicialmente, ella solo tocaba el teclado e hizo algunos arreglos vocales, pero posteriormente se le dio el rol de vocalista principal. El resto de los miembros de Angelfish ; Martin Metcalfe, Fin Wilson y Derek Kelly actualmente forman parte de la banda Isa & the Filthy Tongues, cuyo álbum debut fue lanzado en mayo de 2006.

Angelfish tuvo un pequeño hit con el sencillo "Suffocate Me" el cual captó la atención del productor Steve Marker cuando el video salió al aire en el show 120 Minutes de MTV, a tempranas horas de la mañana, mientras Steve Marker se encontraba trabajando en un proyecto con el productor de Nirvana, Butch Vig. Poco después Vig le propuso a Manson que se uniese a su proyecto (la banda que se llamaría Garbage) lo que condujo a la ruptura de Angelfish.

Posible regreso de Garbage

El grupo que apareciera en el año 1995, convirtiéndose en una auténtica revelación musical tras vender más de 14 millones de copias de sus discos en todo el mundo, regresa este año 2010 para componer nuevas canciones. Sus integrantes siguen siendo los mismos que antaño, la cantante Shirley Manson, y los productores Butch Vig, Steve Marker y Duke Erikson.

Recientemente se han encerrado en el estudio de grabación, concretamente una semana, como así lo ha confirmado Julián Ruiz, que es el que ha dado la noticia. Este sería su 5to disco de estudio, justo después de “Bleed Like Me”. Recordemos que con el primero, que recibe el mismo nombre que la banda, “Garbage”, consiguió vender más de 4 millones de copias y se convirtió en doble disco de platino.

Desde el blog queremos hacer un llamado a la solidaridad, para que entre todos hagamos una vaquita y le compremos una personalidad a Hayley Willimas, o al menos un poquito de cerebro para que ella solita se de cuenta que si queres que te respeten, no tenes que basar tu carrera en copiar a otra persona.

Si bien el 60% de la culpa de la foto es del fotografo, cuya originalidad debe estar perdida por ahi (si alguien la encuentra avisenle), el otro 40% de la culpa es de esta chica, no solo por no respetar a la vieja escuela de los 90s, sino también por tener la osadia de creer que ella es lo suficientemente igual o mejor que Shirley Manson como para superarla dentro del female front del rock alternativo. Y logicamente, por no tener conciencia del respeto que merece una artista como Shirley.
